About the course

What is the Neuroscience
for Change Course?

This two-day virtual classroom brings together the science of how brains process information with the practical realities of leading people through workplace change. The result: you understand why people resist, disengage, or struggle — and you know exactly what to do about it.

Built around PEPE© model (co-written by Melanie Franklin), the course covers four domains and eight dimensions that map directly to the brain’s reaction to change. Each dimension gives you concrete, immediately applicable techniques you can test on real initiatives from day one.

On completing the course you sit an APMG International examination (fees and materials included in our course) and receive a digital badge and certificate that is verifiable and permanent on your professional profile.

Course overview

Four domains.
Eight dimensions. One complete model.

The course is structured around the PEPE© model — Melanie Franklin’s original framework mapping how the brain experiences change. Each domain addresses a different neurological response, and each dimension gives you targeted, practical techniques to work with it.

The course opens with an introduction to neuroscience and what it means in a change context, before moving through each domain in turn. By the end of day two, you have a complete personal toolkit — not a set of slides to file away, but techniques you can apply to live change initiatives immediately.
P

Pain Domain

How the brain responds to perceived threat and discomfort during change.

  • Reducing pain
  • Increasing pleasure
E

Error Detection Domain

How the brain identifies mismatch between expectation and reality.

  • Reducing mismatch
  • Increasing positive signals
P

Energy Domain

How cognitive load and depletion affect the capacity to change.

  • Increasing energy for change
  • Reducing energy needed
E

Peaks & Valleys Domain

How emotional highs and lows shape engagement over time.

  • Managing peaks
  • Promoting valleys

Why this course is different

You’re learning directly
from the person who built the model

Most courses teach neuroscience through someone who has read the research. This course is taught by the practitioner who translated that research into the PEPE© model and has been applying it in real organisations for years. The difference shows in every example, every technique, and every answer to a question you wouldn’t know to ask.

Author of Neuroscience for Change

The course is built on the book Melanie wrote. Every concept is delivered with the context only she can give — and an example from her own consulting practice.

🎓
APMG Scheme Owner & Chief Examiner

Melanie defines the syllabus and writes the exam questions. There is no more direct route to your certification than preparing with the examiner.

From the delegates

What people say
after two days with Melanie

Result: Immediately applicable techniques

The course gave me a perfect balance of theory and practice. I left with strategies I could use straight away — tools I’ve already tested on a live programme I’m running. The group work is something you simply can’t get from reading a book.

Senior Change Manager
Result: A language for what I already knew

I came in thinking I probably knew most of it. I left with something I hadn’t expected — a proper framework and language for things I was already doing, but doing less confidently. That shift alone was worth it.

Experienced Change Practitioner
Result: Worth every penny

I nearly didn’t book because I wasn’t sure about two days on a screen. Melanie’s energy and the way she runs the virtual classroom completely changed that view. Illuminating, fun, and practically useful — I’d push anyone to give it a go.

Questions you might have
before booking

Do I need a background in science or change management?

None at all. The course starts from first principles and is designed for everyone involved in workplace change — whatever your role or level of experience. The techniques are practical from the first session, and Melanie’s examples are drawn from real organisations, not academic papers.

Will it feel like spending two days in front of a screen?

The feedback says clearly not. The course is highly interactive — pair exercises, breakout group activities, and whole-group discussion run throughout both days. Melanie brings the kind of presence and energy to a virtual room that makes it feel nothing like a passive webinar. One delegate who came close to not booking described it as illuminating and fun, and said they would actively encourage anyone to give it a try.

This sounds theoretical — will it be useful in practice?

Every technique in the course is designed to be applied to a real change initiative. Delegates consistently leave describing strategies they tested the following week. The PEPE© model exists precisely because Melanie built it from consulting practice — the theory comes after the observation, not before it.

How do I justify the cost to my employer?

The real cost question is the inverse one: what does a poorly-adopted change actually cost your organisation? Rework, repeated programmes, low engagement, and missed benefits add up quickly. Capability for Change also provides a ready-made business case document you can adapt and take straight to your line manager.

1.1%of avg. change manager salary
15–25%salary premium, certified vs uncertified
£12,750+additional earnings per year (conservative)
My employer won’t fund it without a business case.

A change management consultant typically costs £1,500 per day — and rising. Funding your development strengthens your organisation’s internal capability and reduces that reliance. The course pays for itself the first time you lead a change initiative that actually sticks rather than needing to be repeated. Use the ready-made business case on the Capability for Change website to make the case quickly.
