Qualifications and Training in the Workplace and the Barriers from Learning & Development
Qualifications and training in the workplace play a crucial role in ensuring employees have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to perform effectively in their roles. Through Capability for Change, I have built several accredited courses and training modules for Change in the workplace, suitable for employees at all levels. But, we are seeing more of our delegates coming through as being “self-funded”. We want to know what the barriers are to qualifications and workplace training. For Learning and Development managers, surely investing in training for your team is a top priority? So why has the number of people experiencing workplace qualifications decreased?
I want to know more for myself and for other training providers. So, in a few weeks, I’ll be sitting down with Learning and Development managers and teams from a range of organisations. In this focus group-style session, I’ll be exploring what the barriers are and how, as a training provider, I can make my courses more accessible. Following the event, I’ll be sharing my findings, so make sure you’re subscribed to my newsletter for the write-up.
Suspected Barriers for Training and Qualification in the Workplace
Until we have sat down with the members of the focus group, we don’t know for sure what the barriers are for training and qualifications in the workplace. Time constraints, limited budgets, and a lack of management support are common obstacles when it comes to investing in training and qualifications for employees. These are among the top issues we will be discussing in our focus group.
I’m also interested in understanding if the barriers involve the individuals themselves. Are employees feeling too overwhelmed by workloads, and is an additional qualification too much for them? Are they unsure of how training aligns with their personal goals? Because this in itself can lead to disengagement.
The other element I would like to address is organisational culture, as this can also play a role. If learning is not embedded in everyday practice, opportunities can easily be overlooked or undervalued.
I’ll be looking for ways to re-ignite the passion for learning, give individuals the confidence to learn whilst working and discuss how we can make training easier on everyone.

The Importance of Continued Development, Qualifications, and Training in the Workplace
There are several reasons why it’s important for organisations to invest in qualifications and continued development for their team.
- Improves Employee Performance – Regular training helps employees stay up to date with the latest methods, tools, and regulations, leading to higher quality work and fewer mistakes.
- Supports Career Progression – Gaining new qualifications or skills allows individuals to take on new responsibilities and move into more senior roles, improving job satisfaction and retention.
- Boosts Organisational Agility – A well-trained workforce can adapt more quickly to change, helping organisations respond to market demands, innovation, or restructuring.
- Drives Innovation and Continuous Improvement – Training encourages critical thinking and knowledge sharing, fostering a culture where new ideas and improvements can flourish.
