Millennials Aren’t Afraid of Change

Millennials are better at coping with change than any other group in the workforce, according to research amongst over 500 experts. Almost two thirds (61%) say

Millennials are good at dealing with change, making them the most adaptable of any generation. In stark contrast, just one in five (21%) think Baby Boomers are as adaptable.

According to Melanie Franklin, founder of the change management coaching platform, ChangeabilityPro®, which is behind the study, there are a number of reasons why Millennials are often better at handling change: “This generation has grown up in an era of constant change. They’ve had to cope with big reforms to our education system, the 2008 recession, the rise of the gig economy and massive technological transformation early in their careers. For them, constant upheaval is the norm.”

The research, which was conducted amongst experts responsible for managing major changes in some of the world’s biggest businesses, found that Gen Zs are considered much less equipped to deal with change. 46% think this generation is, at best, fair at coping with change and 16% think they’re poor.

Melanie Franklin comments: “This could be because, while they’ve undoubtedly grown up in an era of constant change, Gen Z haven’t yet had the opportunities

Millennials have to amass the real-world experience and skills of coping with disruption in the workplace. Also, this generation values workplace happiness more highly than any other, and this can often feel massively under threat during times of change.”

While the youngest working age group isn’t the most adaptable, the study suggests that the oldest – Baby Boomers – is the least. 47% of the experts think these oldest members of the workforce are poor at dealing with change, and just one in five (21%) think they’re good. The Capability for Change report argues that this group has a much greater desire for stability, having experienced relative steadiness for a period of their careers.

Melanie Franklin concludes: “It’s not the case that some generations can’t cope with disruption in the workplace, rather that we need to recognise that people react differently and need to be supported in different ways when it happens. Companies which recognise this will find it much easier to successfully change, adapt and thrive.”
