Building Consistent Change Capability at Scale: Arcadis

Case Study

As organisations grow, maintaining a consistent approach to change becomes increasingly complex. At Capability for Change, we work with organisations as well as individuals to build practical, scalable change capability that supports delivery in real-world environments.

This was the challenge faced by Arcadis, a global organisation experiencing rapid growth and expansion across its teams.

The Challenge of Managing Change in a Growing Workplace

As Arcadis continued to grow, new team members brought a wide range of experience, approaches and perspectives on how change should be delivered. While this diversity had clear benefits, it can also create inconsistency in how change initiatives are approached and implemented.

Different ways of working began to emerge across teams, making it harder to maintain a shared standard of delivery. This presented a risk not only to internal alignment but also to the consistency of client experience.

Arcadis needed a way to strengthen and align its change capability, ensuring that practitioners across the organisation were equipped with a common, practical approach that could be applied consistently in complex, fast-moving environments. This is where Capability for Change was able to provide clear and concise solutions.

The Capability for Change: Agile Change Coach Course

We partnered with Arcadis to design and deliver a learning experience that would build both confidence and consistency in how change is delivered.

Melanie Franklin delivered the 2 day Agile Change Coach Course via virtual classroom for 10 delegates. The approach focused on practical application rather than theory alone. The training was designed to reflect the realities of working within a large, evolving organisation, balancing structured frameworks with the flexibility needed to operate in complex environments.

Through interactive sessions, discussion and real-world application, participants were encouraged to explore how change principles could be embedded into their day-to-day work. This created space not just for learning but for reflection on current practices and opportunities for improvement.

Delivery and Implementation of the Agile Change Coach Course

The initial programme was delivered to a cohort of 10 Arcadis practitioners. As with all Capability for Change courses, the structure of the training allowed participants to engage deeply with the material while continuing to balance their existing project responsibilities.

Sessions were highly interactive, enabling participants to test ideas, share experiences and apply learning directly to their own work contexts. This ensured that the training was not seen as separate from delivery but as an integral part of it.

Outcomes

Following the programme, Arcadis began to see greater consistency in how change was approached across teams. Practitioners developed a shared language and understanding, making collaboration more effective and reducing friction between different parts of the organisation.

There was also a noticeable increase in confidence among those involved. Participants were better equipped to navigate complexity, apply structured approaches where needed and adapt their methods to suit different situations.

Importantly, the impact of the programme led Arcadis to invest further in developing its capability, with a second cohort of 10 delegates scheduled to undertake the training.
